Which age does Korea use now?
Since 28 June 2023, Korean law and public administration use international age (만 나이), the same as most countries: you are 0 at birth and gain a year on your birthday.
| Name | How it works | Where you still see it |
|---|---|---|
| 만 나이 | 0 at birth, +1 on your birthday | Law, contracts, hospitals, everyday official use |
| 연 나이 | Current year − birth year | Some laws keep it, e.g. youth protection (buying alcohol and tobacco) and military service |
| 세는 나이 | 1 at birth, +1 every New Year | Traditional; some older people still use it in conversation |
Saying your age
Age uses native numbers + 살: 스무 살 (20), 서른두 살 (32). In formal writing you may see Sino numbers + 세: 32세.

FAQ
Why do Koreans ask my age?
Age decides speech level and titles (형, 언니, 선배…). Many people now ask for your birth year instead: 몇 년생이에요?
What is my zodiac animal (띠)?
It follows your birth year in the lunar calendar. The calculator shows it, but if you were born in January or early February, check the Lunar New Year date for your birth year.
